Center for Engineering Systems and Sciences

Science discovers. Engineering delivers. CESS connects.

Uniting science, engineering, and education to drive breakthroughs and scalable technologies.

The Center for Engineering Systems & Sciences (CESS) advances three interconnecting strategic priorities that define its scientific, educational, and technological mission. First, we operate at the synergy of world-class academic science and cutting-edge engineering, delivering research-intensive education that equips scientists and engineers to design complex systems and lead technological transformation. Second, through Engineering Design Science, we bridge the gap between fundamental discovery and industrial implementation, continually learning how to develop more efficiently new technologies and stay at the forefront Engineering Design Research application. Third, as Skoltech’s engineering systems hub and Skolkovo’s full-cycle tech talent engine, we embed translational capability across research, education, and industry, creating a continuous innovation pipeline with teams able to go from concept to demonstrator to market-ready systems. Rooted in fundamental science, CESS generates new basic and applied knowledge and translates these advances into next-generation technologies in autonomous systems and robotics,  aerospace and space exploration , cyber-physical infrastructures, energy conversion, advanced materials, intelligent control, and AI-driven systems.

From vertical farming and precision agriculture to biomedicine; from drone swarms and humanoid robotics to resilient aerospace architectures and digital engineering platforms, our work bridges theory and application. We launch CubeSats, develop smart greenhouse energy systems, advance hybrid manufacturing technologies, and create predictive models for satellite navigation, remote sensing, solar physics and space weather,  transforming deep scientific insight into operational capability.

With a commitment to excellence, we advance fundamental discoveries, bridging curiosity and utility with start-ups, aiming for profound effects on science, education, and society.
