Skoltech to present CHIONE ice forecasting system
November 19, 2025
On November 26, the Skoltech Artificial Intelligence Center will present CHIONE – a smart system for forecasting weather and ice conditions – developed in collaboration with the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of RAS. The event will be held at the “Digital Economy” autonomous non-profit organization in Moscow.

CHIONE is an AI system that accurately predicts weather and ice conditions along the Northern Sea Route. Using open-source models such as NEMO+SI3, WRF, and WW3, as well as open reanalysis data and satellite images, CHIONE performs calculations and leverages AI technology to accelerate and refine forecasts. A critical solution for maritime logistics in the Arctic, CHIONE generates ice forecasts for logistics planning, including icebreaking support along the Northern Sea Route. These forecasts can also be used by ports and coastal infrastructure for operational planning and risk mitigation.

The system, which is now ready to enter the market, was named after Chione, the ancient Greek goddess of snow. This name reflects its primary goal of helping Arctic economic stakeholders navigate challenging ice and weather conditions and reduce uncertainty in management decision-making. Shipping and oil and gas companies will benefit from reduced risk of ice entrapment and unscheduled downtime, optimized routes, lower icebreaking support costs, fuel savings, shorter transit times, more accurate voyage planning, and improved real-time situational awareness.

“The increase in cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route and other Arctic routes underscores the growing need for shipping safety, sustainable supply chains, and accurate planning. CHIONE uses advanced oceanic and atmospheric numerical models, hybrid modeling methods, and AI algorithms to generate 72-hour forecasts of ice concentration, thickness, and drift, as well as meteorological and oceanic conditions. These calculations are much faster and more accurate compared to conventional methods,” says Vladimir Vanovsky, who heads the Hybrid Modeling direction at the Skoltech AI Center.

The event will feature presentations by developers, a system demonstration, and a discussion of practical application scenarios in shipping and infrastructure management, as well as formats of integration into corporate information systems. There will also be a special section focusing on connection terms and participation in pilot projects.

Participants will receive free trial access to the system and special “early access” connection terms.
